History:

In the winter of 2008, a small committee formed to discuss the possibility of a community garden that would benefit the youth of Price Hill.  It was decided that a pilot project would take place during the summer, providing youth from Holy Family, Rees E. Price and the Price Hill Recreation Center with an opportunity to grow their own vegetables on the vacant plot of land adjacent to the recreation center. It was the hope of the group to create a supportive environment to promote hands-on learning, experimenting, and observation.

In May 2008, with funding and volunteer support provided by Great American Insurance, a small raised bed garden was installed. In the summer of 2008 many students benefited from the experience they found digging in the garden and eating produce they had grown on their own. The experience sparked additional educational opportunities and hope for the future of the garden. The success of the pilot project caught the attention of the Marvin Lewis Foundation who agreed to help expand and enrich the garden and surrounding lot. On October 6ththe foundation brought over 300 volunteers along with the Cincinnati Bengals to expand the garden, create a pars fitness course and landscape the surrounding area.

Since the expansion of the garden, the site has served over 600 youth through gardening experience and an educational program. It has opened up the doors to the involvement of our minority population as well as additional partners who have helped to create a positive community asset. As we look to the future of this site, we are excited by plans to build an outdoor education area as well as the development of an urban orchard.
